Colorado Springs-based El Pomar Foundation has distributed $1million to Colorado nonprofits, its fifth allocation since theeconomy tanked in 2008.
Nonprofits in El Paso and Teller counties received $299,000, ElPomar spokeswoman Josie Burke said Wednesday. More than half of the$1 million went to rural areas of the state.
In a news release, El Pomar officials said that even though thereare signs of improvement in the U.S. economy, a survey of thestate's health and human service providers indicated 'the needs arestill great.'
The survey found that demand for services increased for 88percent of the nonprofits in the past 12 months, while 59 percent ofthem experienced a decline in donations.
'Throughout the state, health and human service providers arestill challenged by an increase in demand for services coupled witha decrease in funding,' El Pomar Chairman and CEO William J. Hyblsaid in the statement. 'The trustees of El Pomar feel strongly thatthis remains an area where the Foundation can make a significantdifference by providing resources for those organizations that aresupporting Coloradans still struggling to get by on a daily basis.'
More than 150 nonprofits, including 31 in the Pikes Peak region, are receiving money through the Colorado Assistance Fund V, the nameof the El Pomar emergency grant program. Previous CAF distributionsof $1 million went out in each of the past four years.
Burke said the checks went out in the mail on Tuesday. Some werehand-delivered, including one to Care and Share Food Bank ofSouthern Colorado.
'With today's donation we are able to provide the equivalent of600,000 meals to those in need in Southern Colorado through ourpartner agencies!' Care and Share said in a Facebook posting.
