Daniels Fund awards grant to Cesar Chavez Academy. - The Pueblo Chieftain (Pueblo, Colorado)

Byline: John Norton

May 16--Cesar Chavez Academy has been awarded $250,000 from Colorado's Daniels Fund to help develop new math programs and train teachers.

The Daniels Fund comes from the estate of oilman-turned-cable-TV pioneer Bill Daniels and makes awards every year to worth programs in the Rocky Mountain area.

The school will use the money to develop an articulated math curriculum and to create the Cesar Chavez School Network Math Fellowship Program.

Carolyn Gery, director of new school development, grants, and technology, said, 'This grant will enable CCA and (Dolores Huerta Preparatory High), both schools of the Cesar Chavez School Network, to create a replicable K-16 math program and companion math teacher fellowship program.

'The combination will have the capacity to effectively raise student achievement in mathematics, while providing a comprehensive internship/incentive program for current and new math teachers.'

According to school officials, CCSN fellows will attain a position as a middle or high school teacher in the school's program, earn Colorado state certification and develop classroom instructional skills through a comprehensive induction program providing mentoring, coaching, and support services.

Math fellows also will spend part of the school day working together on an articulated math program that may be copied at other schools.

Other Daniels fund grant recipients include: The Alliance for Choice in Education; Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, Rural Initiatives; Craig Hospital; Escuela de Guadalupe; Hmong American Association of Colorado; Hospice of Metro Denver, Inc.; Poudre School District, School Partners Program; Qualistar Early Learning; Roaring Fork School District No. RE-1; Rocky Mountain Health Care Services; Urban Peak Denver; US Association of Blind Athletes; and others.
